Could you be spared from dental suffering through a root canal in Edinburgh?

Care for those who need it most

At Edinburgh Endodontist, it is the aim of our practice to ensure that each of our patients receives the care that they need in a timely and professional manner. We recognise that, for many, the recent and continuous Covid-19 measures have meant that our focus has been required elsewhere and that as a result many people have put their dental care to one side. Whilst this is perfectly understandable, and we empathise with our patients during this trying and uncertain time, we also stress the importance of maintaining a good level of oral care and hygiene.

Root Canal Edinburgh

It is commonly said that our teeth are one of the best indicators of our overall health, and as such, if our teeth are in a poor condition, then it can lead to a number of knock-on negative health ramifications. However, here at Edinburgh Endodontist, we are dedicated to providing the necessary care – such as a root canal in Edinburgh – to any of our patients who require it, to ensure that they are orally fit and healthy enough to smile in the face of whatever life may throw at them.

What is a root canal in Edinburgh?

Root canal treatment, otherwise known as endodontics, is the name which is given to a dental procedure which is designed to remove infected pulp within a tooth and restore it to its normal functionality. Anyone who requires a root canal in Edinburgh can trust that our expert endodontists, here at Edinburgh Endodontist, will make sure that they get the best possible standard of care.

There are several reasons as to why the pulp inside a patient’s tooth may become infected, such as decay, leaking fillings and dental trauma. Whatever the cause of the infection may be, having an infected tooth is usually largely uncomfortable and painful for the patient, and – if they do not opt for root canal treatment – can result in them having to lose the tooth entirely. The ‘canals’ which the procedure gets its name from are the hollow tubes within the inside of the patient’s teeth.

When the tooth becomes infected, these canals fill up with harmful bacteria, which can potentially spread elsewhere and affect other parts of the patient’s body. Thankfully, there are very few nerve endings within these ‘canals’ and therefore the infected pup can be safely removed and the canals filled with a permanent dental bonding agent without affecting the functionality of the patient’s tooth after the treatment has been completed.

What does root canal treatment involve?

After an infection within the patient’s pulp has been identified through dental x-rays, the root canal treatment will be carried out by one of our expert, highly trained and efficient endontonsits, here at Edinburgh Endondotics. This begins with an opening being made within the infected tooth – whilst the patient is under local anesthesia to ensure they are not in any discomfort. After this, an endodontic file is then used to remove all of the infected pulp and tissue from within the tooth.

Following this, a gum-like dental filling material made from Gutta-percha is then used to plug the bottom of the tooth, before a permanent dental filling agent is placed within the remainder of the tooth. Often, when required, a post is added at this point for additional support. Finally, a crown is added to the top of the tooth and the procedure is finished – having removed all the harmful, infected pulp, and restoring the patient tooth to full health.
