What is a root canal?
Root canal Edinburgh is a surgery that is required to physically remove an infection that has developed inside the tooth and it is something that we do every single day. Our sole job is to save your teeth and take away your pain. We are healers, not destroyers and any fear you may have about the surgery is no longer necessary, as we can explain exactly what awaits you and why you need not be afraid.
First and foremost, if you are nervous we can offer you sedation, there is no reason why dental treatments should leave you feeling anxious and your mental health is important to us, so we will gladly sedate you if you feel afraid.
Your dentist probably referred you to us as your case may well be more complicated than they can handle themselves, but not to worry, this is something that we do so often that we welcome a challenging patient for root canal Edinburgh and there is one more thing to bear in mind before we begin; you won’t feel a thing. After numbing, our work can begin. We will drill away the top part of the tooth in order to open the area where the pulp is contained, it may well be at this point that the tooth has become blackened and decayed and that area will no longer be able to be saved so we take it away. Once we have made enough space to work we will begin to clean out whatever infection there may still be and remove all decay from the tooth. This requires some scraping and flushing, all of which you will not feel or even notice if you are sedated. Once the pulp chamber is clear we can fill it with a rubbery substance called gutta percha and it will then be safe from future infection.
A crown to finish you off
Once your tooth is cleaned and filled we will fit it with a custom made and tooth-coloured crown in order to cap it off and hold it all together once more. This is the final restorative part of the treatment and will leave your tooth looking as natural as all the others.
