Root Canal Edinburgh

The structure of a tooth

To understand root canal Edinburgh you need to know how exactly a tooth is structured. The tooth is made up of 3 layers, the outside section which is very hard and protects the tooth is called enamel. This is the bit that we see in the mouth that is cushioned between the gums and it has no feeling, beneath the enamel is a hard substance called dentine, this does have a lot of feeling and if you happen to lose some enamel you will have sensitive teeth. Inside the middle of the dentine is a chamber which is filled with pulp, these are all soft tissue and nerve endings that come through the bone into the chamber.

The tooth pulp is important when teeth are still growing and it is what may become infected later in life. Because it is directly fed through the bone, the bone may become infected as well if the problem is left for too long, however, as an adult, you can go without the pulp so it is possible to clean it out with an endodontic treatment.

The treatment

Root canal Edinburgh is the thing we specialise in. In fact, it is all we do day in and day out so you are in very capable hands with us, and in most cases, a dentist probably referred you to us because your case may well be more complicated than they can handle themselves. We offer sedation if need be and before we begin we will first expertly numb the side of the face where the root canal needs to take place.

After numbing, our work can begin; we will drill away the top part of the tooth in order to open the area where the pulp is contained, it may well be at this point that the tooth has become blackened and decayed, and that area will no longer be able to be saved so we take it away. Once we have made enough space to work we will begin to clean out whatever infection there may still be and remove all decay from the tooth, this requires some scraping and flushing, all of which you will not feel or even notice if you are sedated. Once the pulp chamber is clear we can fill it with a rubbery substance called gutta percha and it will then be safe from future infection

Crowning glory

Once your tooth is cleaned and filled we will fit it with a custom made and tooth-coloured crown in order to cap it off and hold it all together once more. This is the final restorative part of the treatment and will leave your tooth looking as natural as all the others.
